Best budget mechanical keyboards in South Africa (2026)

Budget in South Africa means something different from budget in a US review. A $70 keyboard is R1,150 here before you add shipping, 15% VAT and a courier's clearance fee, and the "cheap" boards that American lists recommend often have no local stock at all. So this list only includes keyboards you can buy from a South African retailer today, with the price we saw and where we saw it. Twelve boards, all under about R1,600, ranked by what you get for the money.

The list at a glance

Stock moves fast at this end of the market. Several of these were out of stock at the retailer on the day we checked, which we note below. The rand was R16.23 to the dollar that day; if it slides, the imported boards move first.

The picks, and why they sit where they do

1. Womier SK80 Pro, R1,150

The most complete board on this list, and not by a small margin. It is a gasket-mounted 75% with pre-lubed POM linear switches, hot-swap sockets, dye-sub PBT keycaps that will never go shiny, tri-mode wireless with a 4,000mAh battery, a magnetic slot for the dongle, and a colour display that shows battery, connection and lock states or any GIF you upload. Every theme ships with a matching wrist rest, mousepad and braided cable in the box. Wccftech scored it 8.7 out of 10 and reviewers single out the soft, muted gasket sound.

The honest notes: the case is ABS plastic, not aluminium, the driver is Windows software rather than VIA, and the theme artwork can make some legends harder to read at a glance, which is the price of a keyboard that looks like this. At full screen and RGB brightness the battery lasts about three days; turn the lighting down and it lasts weeks. Nothing else under R1,200 in South Africa gives you PBT, gasket mount, wireless and a screen together, which is why it is first.

2. Ajazz AK820, R849 at Wootware

The best wired 75% for the money. Gasket mount, hot-swap, Ajazz's own pre-lubed linear switches, and a sound that reviewers keep calling expensive. MyBroadband forum regulars have been recommending it for a year. The catch is the software, which several reviews call buggy, and it is wired only. One-year Wootware warranty.

3. Marvo Titan 75, R599 at Evetech

The cheapest way into tri-mode wireless with a gasket mount and hot-swap. Banana Crystal linear switches and a 4,000mAh battery for under R600 is remarkable, and Evetech gives it a one-year local warranty. Expect a plastic case and plainer keycaps; at this price that is fair.

4. Keychron C3 Pro 8K, R1,199 at FirstShop

The pick if you want QMK and VIA remapping on a budget, or a TKL for work. TechRadar said it punches well above its weight. Red-only backlight, wired only, and the FirstShop price was down to two units when we looked; Incredible had it at R1,599.

5. Attack Shark 87-key, R699 on Takealot

Tri-mode, hot-swap, pre-lubed linears, a 4,000mAh battery, and a listed price of R699 against a "was" of R1,999. Sold by a marketplace seller rather than Takealot itself, so check the returns terms before you click. Good value if you are comfortable with that.

6. Redragon K617 Fizz, R459

The cheapest hot-swap board in the country. A 60% with Redragon's linear reds, wired, and a large local stock. No arrow keys, no wireless, and the keycaps are basic. As a first mechanical keyboard or a spare, it is hard to argue with R459.

7. Redragon K552 Kumara, R615 at Wootware

The board half of South Africa started on. Solid, cheap, and backed by Redragon SA's 18-month warranty. It is not hot-swap, the Outemu switches are loud, and there is no software. It is here because it is reliable and everywhere, not because it is exciting.

8 and 9. Redragon K631 Castor Pro and K599 Deimos

Two compact wireless Redragons. The Castor Pro is a tri-mode 65% with hot-swap at R720, but its 1,600mAh battery is small and it was out of stock at the supplier when we checked. The Deimos is a 2.4GHz 65% at R479 from tech.co.za, also out of stock on the day. Worth a look when they land.

10. Attack Shark X85 Pro, R849 on Takealot

A 75% with a small screen and a knob, tri-mode and hot-swap. It is the closest thing on the list to the SK80 Pro's idea at a lower price. It was out of stock when we checked, and it does not ship with the wrist rest, mousepad, PBT keycaps or the themed finish.

11. Keychron C1 Pro, R1,250 at FirstShop

A plain, well-built wired TKL with hot-swap and QMK. If the C3 Pro is gone, this is the same idea for R50 more.

12. Logitech G413 TKL SE, R1,299 at Evetech

Here for completeness because people search for it. Two-year local warranty from a big brand, but no hot-swap, six-key rollover, and GamesRadar said it cannot compete with its own predecessor. The five boards above it at half the price are better keyboards.

What to check before you buy any of them

• Local stock or import? An import pays 15% VAT on the price plus shipping plus a 10% uplift, and the courier adds R200 to R600 to clear it. A R900 board on an overseas site is R1,400 by the time it is on your desk, with a warranty on the other side of the world.
• Who handles the warranty? Every product sold in South Africa carries a six-month warranty under the Consumer Protection Act, and it cannot be waived. What differs is who you deal with. Redragon SA gives 18 months. We handle ours in Durban. A marketplace seller on Takealot may be a one-person import business.
• Hot-swap or not? If you might ever change switches, buy hot-swap. It costs almost nothing extra now and it is the difference between a keyboard you upgrade and one you replace.
• PBT or ABS keycaps? ABS keycaps go shiny where your fingers rest within months. PBT doesn't. On this list only the SK80 Pro and the Keychrons ship with PBT.

If you can stretch to R1,500

One step above this list sits the Womier SK75: a full CNC aluminium 75% with gasket mount, hot-swap, tri-mode and VIA for R1,500. It is the only aluminium wireless board under R2,000 in the country, and the comparable Keychron Q1 boards cost R4,000 here. If your budget has R350 of give in it, that is where it should go.
